The candidate will be responsible for identifying policy and regulatory issues within the Australian Commonwealth (federal) Government that may impact on the company’s business operations. They will advocate for the company’s policy positions with individuals influencing or developing policy for the Commonwealth Government. They will be responsible for gathering intelligence on legislative and regulatory policy initiatives and contributing to the development of appropriate responses.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the leading provider of hyper-scale public cloud computing services, is seeking a highly motivated, innovative and skilled professional to join its ANZ public policy team, based in Canberra. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to contribute to and support Australian Commonwealth (federal) Government policy development, including in areas of technology adoption, digital infrastructure and services, data sharing, use and security, or whole of government transformation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying policy and regulatory issues within the Australian Commonwealth (federal) Government that may impact on the company’s business operations. They will advocate for the company’s policy positions while proactively developing ethical relationships with individuals influencing or developing policy for the Commonwealth Government. They will be responsible for gathering intelligence on legislative and regulatory policy initiatives and contributing to the development of appropriate responses. The successful individual will be a talented communicator capable of positioning and explaining complex technology issues and articulating the views and positions of AWS across a myriad of interconnected policy domains. They will demonstrate the capacity to engage and relate to public officials as well as being an influential AWS representative on business associations and coalitions critical to advancing AWS’s public policy and business objectives. This role is based in Canberra.

The successful candidate will report to the AWS ANZ Head of Public Policy. They will:

  1. Contribute to the development of public policy positions for AWS and lead and drive advocacy with senior policy officials in Commonwealth Departments and Agencies;
  2. Assess and communicate the implications of potential regulatory actions, identify public sector business opportunities of government initiatives, develop enhancement or mitigation strategies to policy proposals, and coordinate advocacy efforts, outreach programs and the communication of key AWS business initiatives;
  3. Collect and verify intelligence relating to legislative, regulatory, and policy issues of interest to AWS;
  4. Develop innovative approaches to advance AWS’s policy positions both directly and through industry associations/coalitions, partners and peers to enable a transparent and technology-informed regulatory environment at a national level;
  5. Work collaboratively and transparently with AWS business groups, specifically the AWS Federal Public Sector team, to ensure alignment with core business priorities, public policy goals, and “go to market” strategies.

The successful candidate must be a respected and experienced professional who is inquisitive, intellectually ambitious and enthusiastic about technology, enjoys working hard and being continually challenged, demonstrates sound judgment and autonomy in ambiguous situations, and initiates and succeeds in robust advocacy.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• 5+ years’ experience working on public policy development, government relations, or communications in areas with a strong focus on technology or digital transformation.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to and lead in the development of public policy initiatives and/or execute significant policy change.
• Demonstrated ability to engage and successfully advocate to the Commonwealth (federal) Government.
• Demonstrated understanding of the ethics of public sector engagement.
• Bachelor's Level Degree

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A track record of successful policy development and advocacy.
• A thorough understanding of the end to end Commonwealth policy development and legislative processes, including Cabinet procedures, committee processes and parliamentary procedures.
• Extensive high-level network in the Commonwealth Public Sector.
• Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous circumstances.
• Ability to work independently and contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• A track record of successful public engagements (e.g. participation in expert panels), including on topics of technology and digital transformation.
• Common sense, great judgment, and a good sense of humor.
