Are you a regular reader of legal updates, dreaming of a career with deep purpose? Do you want to build an exceptionally diverse legal toolkit while making a tangible difference in your community? A prominent public interest law firm seeks a dedicated Staff Attorney to join their dynamic team in Columbia, South Carolina.

This position offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain broad litigation experience across a wide range of civil matters. Instead of getting stuck in a single, narrow practice area, you will handle diverse cases that directly impact the lives of local individuals and families.

Why This Role is the Ultimate Career Accelerator

For newer attorneys or those looking to pivot, this firm provides an ideal environment to fast-track your legal development. You will step out of the background and into the courtroom, building foundational skills that set you apart for the rest of your career.

  • Broad Legal Exposure: You will manage a varied caseload that keeps your days engaging. Cases span critical areas including employment law, social security, disability, workers’ compensation, evictions, divorce, custody, and domestic violence.
  • Hands-On Courtroom Experience: You will regularly handle hearings and trials. Rather than just drafting research memos in a back room, you will actively stand up for your clients in court.
  • A Built-In Safety Net: While you enjoy high autonomy over your files, you will never work in a silo. You will collaborate with a supportive team of experienced legal professionals who value mentorship and shared strategic knowledge.
  • Lifestyle Balance: You can finally escape the pressure of the billable hour matrix. This organization focuses entirely on client outcomes and community advocacy, allowing you to maintain true work-life harmony.
Your Daily Impact as a Staff Attorney

In this role, you will serve as the primary advocate for low-income clients and underserved populations facing complex legal challenges. Your daily work will include:

  • Direct Representation: Guidance of clients through the entire civil litigation process, from initial intake to final resolution.
  • Case Advocacy: Development and execution of practical legal strategies for housing disputes, family law matters, and administrative appeals.
  • Litigation Leadership: Preparation for and leadership of hearings, trials, and administrative proceedings with confidence.
  • Persuasive Writing: Conduct of focused legal research to draft clear, compelling briefs, motions, and pleadings.
  • Community Connection: Protection of client rights and navigation of systemic barriers to help build a more equitable society.
Qualifications

The firm welcomes motivated, empathetic legal professionals who bring a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. The requirements include:

  • Education: A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensure: Active membership in the South Carolina Bar in good standing.
  • Mission Alignment: A genuine commitment to public interest law and a desire to serve diverse communities with dignity.
  • Core Skills: Sharp research capabilities, strong writing skills, and clear interpersonal communication.
  • Adaptability: The ability to pivot between different practice areas, manage multiple files, and meet strict deadlines independently.

Note: This position description provides a general overview of the role. The firm may introduce additional practice areas or responsibilities as community needs evolve.
