Job summary

The Public Information Officer for the City of Fredericksburg, Virginia, supports comprehensive communications across City departments under the Communications Manager. Responsibilities include public safety messaging, advising leadership, media relations, and coordinating communications operations.

The ideal candidate excels in editorial judgment, media interactions, and engaging with the community and City employees to maintain clear, accurate information sharing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
• Three (3) years of experience in communications, journalism, media, public relations or closely related field.
• Or equivalent education and/or experience.

Responsibilities

• Acting as the City’s spokesperson, distributing press releases and organizing news conferences.
• Manage the City’s media relations and monitor coverage to enhance the City’s image.
• Manage the City’s digital and social media accounts and websites with consistent branding.
• Design and edit materials such as brochures and press releases, and prepare speeches.
• Present information to the public, coordinate community events, and support emergency operations.
