The Bureau of School Nutrition is seeking an LTE Public Health Nutritionist to support and enhance child nutrition programs across Wisconsin. In this role, you will collaborate with school nutrition professionals through both in-person and virtual engagements to drive innovation in areas such as farm to school, food safety, grants, marketing, communications, and training. You will work with a diverse group of partners, all united by a shared goal: ensuring children have access to healthy, nutritious meals. This position offers flexibility through remote work options, opportunities to travel statewide, and access to continuing education and professional development.

Important details to consider:

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position.

Anticipated start date: September 21, 2026.

The position is scheduled to work 32 hours per week for approximately 32 weeks

The anticipated appointment will conclude in late April or early May 2027.

The work schedule excludes the week of Thanksgiving and approximately two weeks during the Christmas and New Year's holiday period.

Position Summary

The LTE Public Health Nutritionist supports the Bureau of School Nutrition's mission of ensuring Wisconsin students have access to healthy, nutritious meals by providing technical expertise, training, and guidance to school nutrition professionals across the state. This position helps schools successfully implement federal child nutrition programs by conducting menu and nutrient analyses, evaluating program compliance, developing educational resources, and providing consultation on nutrition standards and best practices. Through collaboration, training, and technical assistance, this role contributes to strengthening school meal programs and promoting student health statewide.

In this role, you will:

• Conduct nutrient analyses and review school menus to ensure compliance with USDA child nutrition requirements.
• Evaluate school nutrition programs through administrative reviews and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
• Deliver training, presentations, and technical assistance to school nutrition professionals on nutrition standards, menu planning, food safety, and federal program requirements.
• Develop educational resources, guidance documents, and communication materials that support successful program implementation.
• Collaborate with schools, grant recipients, professional organizations, and internal teams to advance child nutrition initiatives across Wisconsin.
• Support statewide nutrition programs through grant activities, website content, newsletters, and other program initiatives as needed

Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.

LTES: Limited-term positions are not permanent civil service positions, and as such, these positions do not offer the full range of benefits of civil service employment. These opportunities can, however, provide insight into the variety of positions and opportunities for employment available with the DPI. LTE positions are limited to 1,039 hours per year and require Wisconsin residency.

Remote Work: This position offers up to 95% remote work within the State of Wisconsin, with one required onsite meeting per month in Madison, WI. Employees must maintain secure, reliable high-speed internet access.

Travel: This position will have weekly in state travel between November and May. Overnight travel is expected.

Headquarters: The position is headquartered at 201 W. Washington Ave. in Madison, WI, and employees are required to report there on their first day of employment. In addition, the employee may need to report to their headquarter location as operational needs require. Reimbursement for traveling to or from the employee’s headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.).

Pre-hire requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of hire. A TB screen will be required prior to start.

Legal authorization: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., without DPI sponsorship). The Department of Public Instruction does not sponsor visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

Qualifications

A minimally qualified applicant must have all the below:

• Experience or education related to at least one USDA Child Nutrition Program (e.g., National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program)
• Experience in food service or nutrition-related work (e.g., meal planning, food production, menu analysis, recipe standardization, or nutritional evaluation)
• Experience providing training or instruction on nutrition related topics
• Eligible for or holds certification as a Certified Dietitian (CD) in Wisconsin and/or Registered Dietitian (RDN)

Well-qualified applicants will also have experience:

• Experience with nutrition analysis (i.e., nutrient analysis, menu review, evaluating nutritional content of meals or food products)
• Experience working with grants (i.e., developing, managing, reviewing, or supporting grant-funded programs or applications)
• Experience in evaluating nutrition programs for compliance (i.e., interpreting federal and/or state regulations such as USDA requirements, assessing program practices, and providing recommendations or technical assistance to ensure compliance)
• Experience in conducting or supporting program reviews or administrative reviews (i.e., participating in formal review processes, completing required review components, documenting findings, or contributing to official review reports)
