Job description

The County of San Luis Obispo is actively recruiting for Public Health Nurse I, II, and Senior positions! This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, temporary, substitute, or limited-term vacancies within the County.

The Public Health Department is currently recruiting Public Health Nurses (PHN) to fill multiple vacancies in the Maternal Child and Adolescent Health Division.

About the Division :

Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) promotes and protects the health and well-being of women, infants, children, adolescents, and their families at increased risk of adverse health outcomes. MCAH is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating services that address population health priorities across San Luis Obispo County. The division collaborates with the community to achieve health goals through assessment, advocacy, education, outreach, quality assurance, and policy development.

The Role of Field Nursing :

Field Nursing allows nurses to have more direct patient interaction through home-based interventions, impacting the health of families in San Luis Obispo County. Programs include Nurse Family Partnership, Healthy Families America, and an Early Support Program, focusing on building relationships, providing guidance and education, and linking to resources from pre-pregnancy through childhood, aiming to reduce health disparities with trauma-informed, family-centered, culturally competent care.

Position Expectations :

Field Nursing positions are based in Morro Bay, Grover Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Paso Robles, serving countywide as needed. Approximately 80% of work is community-based, with 20% in an office setting.

Ideal Candidate :

Passionate about community service, collaborative, knowledgeable in public health nursing principles, with experience in related programs. Bilingual candidates in Spanish are highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications :
  • Public Health Nurse I : Valid California RN license and Public Health Nurse Certificate. No experience required.
  • Public Health Nurse II : Two years as a Public Health Nurse I or related experience.
  • Senior Public Health Nurse : One year as a Public Health Nurse II or three years of related experience. Additional credentials or degrees may substitute for experience.
