Quality Control Specialist I -Visual Editor

Position Summary

The Quality Control Specialist I is responsible for collecting and processing data into the California SEER

  • DMS Cancer Registry database, by performing accurate and timely matching, resolution of edit errors, linkage and consolidation of data submitted by reporting facilities and other regional sources; resolving modified records; processing electronic path reports; abstracting data based on records from physician’s offices and various other sources; performing tasks related to death clearance, including screening and classification, and updating of case data. The Quality Control Specialist I may also assist with regional and statewide tasks as necessary.

This is a high productivity position and the incumbent must be able to maintain productivity goals. This is a reading-intensive position as nearly all aspects of this position are performed on a computer and from reading online source material. The incumbent must be able to work independently.

This is a regular full-time position located in Sacramento, CA. This position may allow for remote work and is expected to work during core business hours for the Pacific time zone. Some travel may be required.

Full salary range for this position : $70,296 to $101,911 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $70,296 (minimum) to $86,104 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

  • Performs Match Tasks, Resolution of Patient Set Errors (RPSE), Linkage, and Consolidation of cancer reports in SEER
  • DMS management system.
  • Process and clear Edits including SEER Submission edits on Consolidation records.
  • Processes NAACCR Modified records and other related tasks.
  • Participates in statewide audits and reliability studies as requested.
  • Comprehensive understanding of cancer therapy, Collaborative Staging, SEER Summary Stage, SEER Extent of Disease (EOD) coding, ICD-O-3 coding, Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules, Hematopoietic & Lymphoid Neoplasm Database, and cancer reporting in California utilizing Volume I.
  • Processes reportable electronic Pathology (ePath) reports in the SEER
  • DMS system, including screening and classification and linkage.
  • Abstracts Physician Only, Path Only, Death Certificate Only, Nursing Home Only and Coroner’s cases.
  • Maintains at least 97% accuracy on abstracts.
  • Assists with special studies such as the SEER POC as needed.
  • Attends all Data Collection section meetings, Data Collection Unit meetings and Public Health Institute / CRGC quarterly meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties or assists with other regional activities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, or substitute with four additional years of related experience.
  • Credentialed by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).
  • At least 2 years of related experience in a hospital, regional or central cancer registry.

Other Qualifications

  • Experience in using knowledge of regional / central registry operations to include data collection, case consolidation, processing electronic path reports, follow-up and follow-back procedures and auditing.
  • Experience in creating clear and concise documents (PowerPoint, memos, etc.) for educational purposes and statewide distribution.
  • Must maintain at least a 97% abstracting accuracy rate set by the California Central Registry (CCR).
  • Must maintain Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credentials by attending either in-person or virtual educational meetings or other methods as prescribed by the NCRA.
  • Ability to abstract, or learn to abstract within six-months of employment.
  • Ability to learn and operate new software programs.
  • Knowledge of cancer reporting requirements, required resources, manuals, and other tools for the collection, abstraction, and editing of tumors reportable in California.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy and physiology, and the cancer disease process.
  • Strong communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate accurately, concisely, and clearly.
  • Strong mathematical skills including statistics, elemental computations and averages / percentages.
  • Ability to travel to perform field work or attend educational meetings if necessary.
  • Must be able to pass the background check required for this position.
