Job description

PROGRAM AND JOB DESCRIPTION:
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health aims to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. The Division employs 1,000 staff and covers areas including environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health, and pest control.

PROGRAM: The Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation (BFSCS)

This bureau protects the public, including vulnerable populations, from hazards that threaten health or safety. It is responsible for inspecting approximately 26,000 restaurants annually, along with other facilities such as school cafeterias, mobile food vending units, adult day care centers, senior centers, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and more.

Inspectors' Duties:
  1. Conduct periodic inspections of commercial and social service establishments, including restaurants, bars, nightclubs, adult entertainment venues, hookah bars, mobile food carts, bakeries, shelters, senior centers, correctional facilities, and schools.
  2. Ensure compliance with the New York City Health Code and other public health regulations to maintain a safe and wholesome food supply.
  3. Enforce provisions of the Smoke-Free Air Act and Tobacco Product Regulation Act.
  4. Review menus and menu boards for nutritional compliance to help reduce chronic diseases and obesity.
  5. Prepare inspection reports using handheld computers and serve court summonses for violations of laws and regulations.
  6. Enforce anti-corruption policies.
  7. Testify at hearings and in court when required.
  8. Travel across the five boroughs using mass transit.
