Job summary

Florida Department of Health in Polk County is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to conduct field inspections of food hygiene, group care, tanning, and related facilities. You will ensure compliance with state codes, track inspections, and maintain records while working in the field across diverse environmental health programs.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in physical or natural sciences or engineering, and CEHP certification within six months of hire.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in physical or natural sciences or engineering.
• CEHP certification in Food Protection to be obtained within six months of hiring.
• Certification as outlined in Florida Statutes 381.0101 for Food Protection.
• Minimum of 30 semester hours in environmental health/science/public health.

Responsibilities

• Inspect assigned food hygiene, group care, and tanning facilities for compliance.
• Perform inspections within required frequencies and conduct re-inspections.
• Track inspection progress and generate reports from the Environmental Health Database.
• Maintain current records of facilities and all inspection activities; ensure EHDB entries are current.
• Investigate complaints and prepare reports and notices; initiate enforcement when needed.
