Job description

Open to candidates who are permanent or those who will be successfully applying for the Open-Competitive PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISER, Exam No. 5116 or the PROMOTION TO PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISER, Exam No. 5541 within the filing period from October 9, 2024, to October 29, 2024.

About the Division of Disease Control

The Division's mission is to safeguard the health of New Yorkers through identification, surveillance, treatment, control, and prevention of infectious diseases. It comprises seven bureaus, including the Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (BHHS), which aims to end transmission, illness, stigma, and inequities related to viral hepatitis, HIV, and STIs. BHHS employs testing, prevention, care, treatment, epidemiology, surveillance, training, community engagement, social marketing, policy advocacy, and social justice initiatives, with over 500 staff across eight programs.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Assist Public Health Advisors in conducting case investigations related to HIV partner services and data to care.
  2. Conduct medical record abstractions under supervision.
  3. Enter and update data on patient records and electronic systems.
  4. Assign cases based on received calls or forms, coordinating with the QA Coordinator.
  5. Answer calls, intake demographic info, and route calls appropriately, including serving as a bilingual communicator in Spanish or Haitian Creole.
  6. Maintain logs, record information, and support data analysis and reporting tasks.
  7. Ensure security and proper maintenance of documents and records.
  8. Support surveillance, epidemiology, and clinical operations as needed.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Fluency in English and either Spanish or French/Creole preferred.
  • NY State Driver's License highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Baccalaureate degree with coursework in health, social, or biological sciences; or
  2. Baccalaureate degree plus six months of related experience; or
  3. High school diploma plus four years of relevant experience; or
  4. Equivalent education/experience.
Additional Requirements

For Assignment Level II, candidates need at least one year of experience as a Public Health Adviser Level I or equivalent experience.
