Job summary

Ohio University Libraries is seeking a GIS Student Assistant (2 positions) based at Alden Library. You will georeference maps, document workflows, and contribute to a public ArcGIS-based map interface.

The role runs fall to spring 2026‑2027, about 6 hours per week across 33 weeks; on‑site schedule Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Minimum qualifications include GIS certificate program enrollment and ArcGIS Pro experience.

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student enrolled in Ohio University’s GIS Certificate program.
  • Completion of introductory GIS course or equivalent GIS experience.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Comfort with iterative problem-solving.
  • Strong organizational skills for documentation, file management, and workflow tracking.
  • Interest in historical maps, local history, archives, web mapping, or digital humanities.
  • Interest in collaborative, public‑facing project work.
  • Strong written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Historical map georeferencing — aligning scanned atlas maps with present-day geographic data using ArcGIS tools.
  • Working with primary sources — reading and interpreting historical maps.
  • Technical documentation — recording methods, decisions, and project steps.
  • Web mapping — reviewing map layers for accuracy and quality and developing a public, interactive online map.
  • Accessibility and usability — considering how different audiences will use the map.
  • Collaboration — working with the project team and partners.
  • Public scholarship — helping with a campus Georef-a‑thon and contributing to a project blog post.
