Job summary

City of Northampton is seeking an Intermittent Gatekeeper to oversee and operate the city’s solid waste and recycling transfer stations. Responsibilities include opening/closing facilities, selling vehicle permits, collecting fees, and guiding the public on disposal options.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, basic math skills, and the ability to read, write, and follow directions. Prior transfer station or landfill experience is helpful.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to read, write and follow directions.
• Understands basic math.
• Ability to quickly and accurately estimate volumes and compute charges.
• Ability to handle money, make change, and complete record keeping forms.

Responsibilities

• Open and close locks, gates, doors, and enclosures at the beginning and end of the day.
• Sells vehicle permits and refuse disposal stickers.
• Estimates volumes, computes charges, collects fees, makes changes, and fills out record-keeping forms.
• Explains solid waste and recycling disposal programs, policies, procedures and regulations to the general public.
• Directs the public to the appropriate receptacles for waste and recyclable materials.
• Enforces policies and regulations by monitoring activities at drop-off areas.
• Monitors refuse to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Operates hydraulic refuse compactors.
• Uses hand tools.
• Maintains the transfer station area in a neat and orderly manner.
• Performs similar or related work as required.
