Job summary

King County invites second-year law students to apply for a 10-week Public Defense Legal Intern internship in June 2027. The program emphasizes meaningful client contact and courtroom exposure under supervision by experienced public defenders.

Interns may appear on record with Rule 9 licensure and participate in civil and criminal practice areas, with a rolling admission process and paid bi-weekly compensation.

Qualifications

• Two years of law school completed by June 2027 and enrolled in good academic standing at an ABA-approved law school.
• Able to qualify as a Rule 9 Licensed Legal Intern under WSBA rules.
• Demonstrated interest in representing indigent persons with strong character and fitness to practice law.

Responsibilities

• Assist attorneys and appear on the record at arraignment hearings, pretrial hearings, and other hearings.
• Assist with trial preparations and client communication, including coordination with social workers and service providers.
• Perform duties as requested and maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
