Washtenaw County Public Defender's Office is seeking an Assistant Trial Lawyer to join the legal defense team. The role provides representation for defendants, including juveniles, who cannot afford counsel.

The position begins under supervision and progresses to more independent work as experience grows. The attorney will interview clients and witnesses, gather background information, and prepare for court appearances through briefs and examinations.

Responsabilidades

• Interview clients, witnesses, and professionals while reviewing police reports and crime scenes to gather facts for representation.
• Investigate backgrounds by interviewing associates and collecting records such as police and school reports.
• Provide effective counseling to clients to evaluate options for bench or jury trials and other dispositions.
• Represent the Public Defender in delivering competent legal representation at arraignments, pre-trial conferences, motions, and trial proceedings.
• Prepare for court appearances by drafting briefs, researching, and planning strategy.
• Stay current on new laws and precedents through reading and training; maintain professional demeanor in court and in meetings with supervisors.
• Confer with supervisors on case status and direction; participate in training and supervising interns; attend community or committee meetings as needed.
