Job summary

The Piedmont Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office in Barrow County seeks an Assistant Public Defender 1 to provide zealous representation to indigent clients in all phases of criminal proceedings.

The ideal candidate holds a JD from an accredited school and is admitted to the Georgia Bar; you will manage case files, prepare motions, negotiate pleas, and represent clients at arraignments and trials under supervision.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in Georgia.
• Strong research and documentation skills.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws.

Responsibilities

• Attends scheduled court appearances; creates new case files and coordinates with court administration, clients, witnesses, experts, and others.
• Represents clients in court at various stages, negotiates at all stages, prepares motions, conducts jury selection, and argues and cross-examines.
• Reviews discovery, interviews clients, inspects records, prepares exhibits, and develops defense strategies.
• Secures mitigating evidence for sentencing, advocates for clients, and communicates case status to clients.
• Keeps abreast of legal changes and participates in professional organizations.
