The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services seeks an Assistant Defender II in the Criminal Division in Bangor. The position targets a criminal defense attorney or JD student planning to take the February or July 2027 bar exam, committed to exemplary representation for those accused of crimes.

This entry-level opportunity involves working with a defense team, investigators, and staff, with plans to pass the bar and participate in indigent defense transformation in Maine.

Qualifications

• JD degree from ABA-approved school or in final year of JD program.
• Licensed to practice law in Maine or sit for the next available bar exam.
• Willingness to take the next available bar exam and seek admission by motion within 12 months of hire.

Responsabilités

• Assist attorneys with legal research and writing before bar admission.
• Represent indigent defendants in all aspects of cases after admission, vigorously and ethically.
• Handle misdemeanor cases initially, with potential to take on less serious felonies.
• Conduct client interviews and maintain case notes for proper representation.
• Research legal issues and write clear motions.
