The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services is seeking an Assistant Defender II in Caribou to provide exemplary representation for indigent defendants. This entry-level to early-career attorney role offers a path to meaningful public service within a state-wide defender office.

Duties include legal research, writing, client interviews, and trial preparation; after bar admission you will handle misdemeanor and selected felony cases with a collaborative defense team. Travel is required.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-approved school or be enrolled in the final year of a JD program.
• Licensed to practice law in Maine or sit for the next available bar exam (Admission by Motion requires licensure within 12 months).
• Ability to develop defense strategies and communicate effectively with clients, prosecutors, and judges.

Responsabilités

• Research questions of law to ensure correct legal interpretations.
• Coordinate defense strategies with defendants prior to trial.
• Represent defendants before prosecutors and juries to defend their interests.
• Prepare cases, coordinate testimony with experts, and present to courts to obtain decisions.
