Job summary

The City of Fremont is seeking a strategic Public Affairs Manager to lead communications, public information, and community engagement for the Fremont Fire Department. This role serves as the Department’s primary Public Information Officer (PIO) and shapes messaging for emergencies, public education, and community outreach.

Ideal candidates will blend strategic thinking with hands-on communications, media relations, and cross-department collaboration to support recruitment, public safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and five years in public affairs/communications required.
• Two years in a lead or supervisory role.
• Experience as Public Information Officer or similar role preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Public Information Officer (PIO) and primary media contact.
• Develop and manage public education, outreach and engagement programs.
• Write and produce press releases, newsletters, briefings and other communications.
• Maintain website, social media and digital communications tools.
• Support emergency alerting and notification efforts (e.g., IPAWS, Nixle).
• Respond to field incidents and special events outside normal hours when needed.
