Job summary

Part-Time Recreation Instructor – Aquatics
SUMMARY

Under basic supervision, oversees and leads a variety of fitness programs and events; performs a variety of tasks in support of the assigned area and program.

  • The Recreation Instructor – Aquatics for Teton County provides high-quality swim instruction and water safety education to community members of all ages and abilities. This position plans, organizes, and delivers swim lessons in accordance with standards established by the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program. The Instructor promotes water safety, skill development, and confidence while ensuring a safe, supportive, and welcoming aquatic environment for residents and visitors.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises and leads the day-to-day fitness class operations, programs and activities allowing plenty of time to build client relations. Arriving early to prepare for fitness class equipment distribution for each class.
  • Must take attendance for assigned fitness classes including the number of participants and keeping track of program roster if applicable.
  • Oversees, leads, and assists with various fitness related activities; observes participants during program; enforces rules and safety procedures; implements disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Participates in facility or venue set-up, clean-up, and sanitation.
  • Supports the relationship between the Teton County staff and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
This position will specifically:
  • Conduct group and private swim lessons for participants ranging from infants to adults and from beginner to advanced skill levels
  • Instruction includes proper stroke technique, water safety practices, and aquatic survival skills, with teaching methods adapted to accommodate varying learning styles and abilities.
  • Maintain continuous supervision of participants to ensure safety, enforces all aquatic facility policies and procedures, and helps maintain a clean and organized pool environment.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans consistent with the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum and prepares instructional materials and equipment prior to each class session.
  • Regularly evaluate participant progress and provide constructive feedback to participants and parents or guardians.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and progress documentation.
  • Will be required to inspect, set up, and properly store aquatic equipment such as kickboards, noodles, and flotation devices, as well as reporting any maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Provide professional and courteous communication with residents, visitors, and staff is expected at all times, supporting Teton County’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles and community wellness through aquatic programming.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Up to 1 year of experience in recreation programs or working with children
  • Prior experience as a swim instructor, lifeguard, or swim coach is preferred.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Wyoming/Idaho Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification from the American Red Cross.
Required Knowledge of:
  • Recreation site safety rules and regulations. Follows proper procedures for safety protocols.
  • Recreation Instructors are responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming studio space for group fitness classes.
  • Methods of program planning and implementation keeping in mind that all classes will be open to all abilities from beginner to expert.
  • Principles, practices, and methods of conflict resolution and problem solving.
Required Skills in:
  • Provides correct exercise modifications to diverse ability levels in all classes.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely.
  • Assessing, prioritizing, and completing multiple tasks and demands simultaneously.
  • Administering basic first aid and CPR.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all competitive swim strokes, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
  • Work is performed both in an indoor or protected environment and outdoors. The incumbent may be occasionally exposed to unfavorable conditions while located at County facilities or at other locations during the course of business.
  • Required to work routine nights and weekends as regular schedule.
