EDUCATIONAL TRAINING/ EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

The Physical Therapist should have a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate in Physical Therapy, should have a Massachusetts Allied Health Physical Therapy License, and should demonstrate ability to communicate and work effectively with students, staff and parents.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Student Support Services and/or his/her designee, the Physical Therapist provides services to students with disabilities, ages 3-21, in order for them to benefit from their program of special education instruction.

SALARY $56,474 to $107,146 Based on education and years of experience as identifiedon the salary scale

RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsive Services
  • Provide screening to identify children who may be in need of services.
  • Provide diagnostic evaluations and implement treatment plans in relation to student need.
  • Provide therapeutic services to students with a wide variety of disorders and delays, both individual and/or group for students aged 3-21.
  • Confer with teachers and staff members and offer suggestions/recommendations for implementation at school and/or home with follow-up support as needed.
  • Assist the team with the referral process for services from outside agencies.
  • Offer parent education to increase their constructive participation towards resolving their child’s issues, through their knowledge and uses of appropriate resources available.
  • Serve as a liaison between home and school and community services when considerable follow-up is necessary.
  • Act in accordance with all federal, state and local laws and policies with respect to confidentiality, suspected cases of abuse and threats of harm or violence.
Consultant
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement effective therapy that integrates the student’s program.
  • Serve as a consultant to school staff members in the development of services.
  • Assume responsibility for goal writing and serving as liaison for IEP’s when identified.
  • Provide inclusionary services.
  • Assist in the referral process of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.
  • Partner with parents/guardians, teachers and mentors to assist students in utilizing and carrying out their plans.
  • Consult and collaborate with school faculty, program coordinators, and parents/guardians to augment students’ positive transitions from grade to grade, school to schools, and, at the High School, onto postsecondary success.
  • Participate in an annual informal assessment to determine the degree to which the program of physical therapy is being implemented.
  • Participate effectively in I.E.P. meetings and parent conferences.
  • Establish and maintain two-way communication with parents, students and other staff members in an honest, positive and constructive manner.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
Administrator
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records and Medicaid logs as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.
  • Serve as a resource in developing proposals for grants related to Physical Therapy.
  • Attend departmental meetings
Professional Responsibilities
  • Provide supervision of PTA’s as assigned in accordance with the licensure laws governed by the Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professions (259 CMR 1.00 through 5.00)
  • Fulfill the requirements of punctuality, reliability and responsibility with regard to school level and school district policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Understand his or her legal responsibilities, as defined by state and federal laws and regulations and school district policy, i.e. acceptable use of internet, child abuse and neglect reporting, civil rights compliance, implantation of IEP’s and 504 plans, student restraint, etc.
  • Plan for and participate in professional improvement activities, i.e. courses, readings, inservice training, and conferences in the areas of Physical Therapy, so as to maintain professional licensure.
  • Maintain professional competence and remain current in issues of best practices in school based physical therapy through in-service training activities provided by the district and other self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Reflect critically upon his/her work and identify areas for further professional development as part of the annual Summative Evaluation, completed by the Executive Director of Student Support Services.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position assigned as may be requested by the Executive Director of Student Support Services.
Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL TRAINING/ EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

The Physical Therapist is required to hold a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate in Physical Therapy, a Massachusetts Allied Health Physical Therapy License, and demonstrate ability to communicate and work effectively with students, staff and parents.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of school based physical therapy services.

Excellent organizational, and oral and written communication skills.

Bilingual preferred.

Possession of a valid drivers license.
