Prerequisites

Working Hours

This is a hospital-based EMS service.

The Paramedic’s Duties

• Functions in uncommon situations and understands stress response and personal well‑being.
• Understands body substance isolation and basic medical‑legal principles.
• Operates within the scope of care defined by the State of Florida Department of Health in conjunction with a Florida licensed EMT or Paramedic.
• Complies with regulations on handling the deceased, notifying authorities, and protecting property and evidence at the scene.

Responsibilities

• Upon arrival at a crash or illness scene, determine safety, assess injuries, count patients, and request additional help if needed.
• Coordinate with emergency medical team members, first responders, police, and fire department personnel.
• Administer emergency medical care, including first‑aid treatment and life‑support in pre‑hospital settings.
• Operate equipment such as EKG machines, external defibrillators, and bag‑valve resuscitators in advanced life‑support environments.
• Extricate trapped individuals and transport injured or sick persons to medical facilities.
• Observe, record, and report to the CLH ED and/or ED Physician patient’s condition, treatments given, and reactions to medications and interventions.
• Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, airway management, and heart monitoring during ambulance transport.
• Administer medications orally or by injection, and perform intravenous procedures under the direction of the ED Physician.
• Communicate with dispatchers and treatment center personnel to provide patient information, arrange reception, and receive instructions for further treatment.
• Immobilize patients for placement on a stretcher using backboard or other spinal immobilization devices.
• Provide emergency medical and trauma care to adults, children, and infants based on assessment findings.
• Open and maintain airways; ventilate patients; administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation using automated external defibrillators.
• Provide pre‑hospital emergency care of simple and multiple system trauma, including controlling hemorrhage, treating shock, bandaging wounds, and immobilizing extremities and the spine.
• Assist in emergency childbirth and manage general medical complaints such as altered mental status, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic reactions, seizures, poisoning, behavioral, environmental emergencies, and psychological crises.
• Search for medical identification emblems to guide appropriate care.
• Assist patients with prescribed medications, including sublingual nitroglycerin, epinephrine autoinjectors, and hand‑held aerosol inhalers.
• Administer oxygen, oral glucose, and activated charcoal.
• Reassure patients and bystanders; work confidently and efficiently, avoiding mishandling, and maintain urgency as required.
• When extricating patients from entrapments, assess injury extent and provide all possible emergency care while using safe removal techniques and prescribed appliances.
• Request additional help or special rescue services from the dispatcher when necessary.

Parental Duties

• Lifting the stretcher and carrying 125 pounds.
• Securing the patient and stretcher in the ambulance.
• Continuing emergency medical care en route to the medical facility.

After‑Call Duties

• Restock and replace used linens, blankets, and other supplies.
• Clean all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures.
• Check all equipment to ensure the ambulance is ready for the next run.
• Maintain the ambulance in efficient operating condition.
• Ensure that the ambulance is clean, washed, and kept in a neat, orderly condition.
• Decontaminate the interior of the vehicle after transporting patients with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure in accordance with local, state, federal regulations and CLH biohazard policies and procedures.
