Responsibilities

Position SummaryThe Part-Time Lifeguard supports a safe, welcoming, and well-managed aquatic environment through proactive and preventative lifeguarding, active surveillance, emergency response, policy enforcement, and service to patrons. The Lifeguard anticipates and identifies potential hazards and unsafe behaviors and applies established rescue and risk-management procedures, communicates clearly with participants and coworkers, and contributes to the readiness and cleanliness of the aquatic facility.

Essential Duties

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
  • Practices proactive and preventative lifeguarding by identifying potential hazards and unsafe behaviors, anticipating incidents, and taking corrective action before an emergency occurs
  • Maintains active, continuous surveillance of assigned aquatic zones and remains rescue-ready throughout each rotation
  • Recognizes and responds to aquatic patrons requiring assistance, injuries, medical emergencies, and other unsafe conditions using approved emergency action procedures
  • Performs water rescues and provides first aid, CPR, and use of an AED within the scope of current certifications and training
  • Enforces facility, pool, and program rules consistently and communicates expectations respectfully
  • Completes opening, closing, chemical log, safety inspection, incident, and shift documentation as assigned
  • Inspects rescue equipment and assigned work areas and promptly reports hazards, damage, or supply needs
  • Maintains orderly pool decks, guard areas, and aquatic support spaces and assists with routine cleaning assignments
  • Provides accurate information and courteous assistance to patrons, guests, and program participants
  • Participates in required in-service training, emergency drills, staff meetings, and skills evaluations
  • Maintains the physical fitness, swimming ability, and rescue skills necessary to safely and effectively perform lifeguard duties
  • Communicates shift conditions, incidents, patron concerns, and unresolved issues to the supervisor
  • Supports aquatic programs, rentals, special events, and facility transitions as assigned
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current nationally recognized lifeguarding certification accepted by the employer
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications appropriate to the lifeguarding certification
  • Ability to demonstrate required rescue, emergency response, and surveillance skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly, enforce rules consistently, and remain attentive during assigned rotations
  • Ability to complete required site orientation and ongoing in-service training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous lifeguarding experience in a collegiate, community, municipal, or commercial aquatic setting
  • Experience serving diverse participant populations
Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work SchedulePart-time schedule with hours varying based on aquatic operations and program needs. Early morning, evening, weekend, holiday, and special event availability may be required.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor recreation, aquatic, fitness, customer-service, office, and activity spaces as assigned.
  • The environment may include moderate to loud noise, changing temperatures, humidity, wet surfaces, crowds, and exposure to cleaning products or outdoor weather conditions.
  • The position regularly interacts with patrons, students, guests, coworkers, vendors, and client representatives.
  • Work may occur during early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • The work environment described is representative of conditions encountered while performing the essential duties of the position.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and move throughout assigned work areas for varying portions of the shift.
  • Frequently communicates with and exchanges accurate information with patrons, participants, staff, guests, and emergency responders.
  • Frequently uses hands and fingers to operate equipment, computers, radios, telephones, point-of-sale devices, or other tools required by the assignment.
  • Occasionally bends, reaches, kneels, crouches, pushes, pulls, and moves supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequently enters the water and performs swimming, rescue, lifting, reaching, pushing, and pulling activities required for emergency response
  • Must be able to observe the entire assigned surveillance zone and hear and respond to emergency signals and verbal communication in a pool environment
  • Must be able to respond promptly to emergency situations and perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
