GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB

The purpose of the class is to perform routine library functions and general clerical work in assigned service or administrative area, and to perform related work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Assists the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Performs routine library and general clerical work in assigned service or administrative area of the County Library.
  • Answers the telephone; provides accurate information as requested and/or forwards calls to appropriate staff person; takes messages, as necessary.
  • Checks books in and out; registers patrons for library cards; places holds on books as requested; inspects returned materials for damage; verifies due date; computes and receives fines.
  • Shelves Library materials; reads and straightens shelves; searches for missing materials.
  • Assists patrons in using various resources and equipment of the Library, to include on-line catalog. Refers persons needing additional assistance to a Librarian; locates books and other materials for patrons; interprets Library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints in areas of responsibility.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of all issues and concerns encountered.
  • Assists co-workers with duties as required.
  • Receives and deposits monies using the cash register; generates receipts and reconciles money daily; prepares reporting paperwork.
  • Assists in training new or volunteer staff as assigned. Addresses or evaluates patron concerns or complaints and makes adjustments to patron account, as necessary.
  • Performs routine clerical work as required, including but not limited to entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, assembling materials, processing daily mail, etc.
  • Attends training, meetings, seminars, and/or workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills.

REASONING REQUIREMENTS

Requires performing semi-routine work following procedures with occasional problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS

Requires light work that involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. Must be able to lift 25 pounds and meet other physical demands of shelving books and materials, including pushing loaded book trucks; stooping, bending or stretching.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking ability, and color perception.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS

Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
