Job summary

Lansing Community College’s Automotive Technologies Lab is hiring a part-time Lab Assistant to support instruction and student projects in the automotive lab. The role requires assisting with class preparation and safety, and coordinating materials and tools for the scheduled sessions.

The successful candidate will help maintain a safe, well-organized lab environment and collaborate with instructors to support student learning. Evening or weekend hours may be required.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in a related field OR High School Diploma/GED with one year of related industry work experience or related college coursework.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database usage.

Responsibilities

• Assist students in completing lab projects and assignments; provide instruction as directed by the instructor of record.
• Evaluate student performance as requested by the instructor of record.
• Ensure lab is set up with required tools and materials for classes; clean up after each class.
• Coordinate ordering, inventory, and maintenance of lab supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Communicate effectively with students and peers to maintain a safe lab environment with proper PPE and safety practices.

A Lab Assistant functions as the secondary source of instruction in the Automotive Lab to support instruction provided by the instructor of record. Assists students in completing lab projects and assignments by providing necessary instruction. Provides evaluation of student performance as requested by the instructor of record. Ensures that the lab is set up and prepared with all required tools and materials for the assigned class and planned instruction. Inspects the lab and classroom area after each class to ensure proper cleanup of the facility. Coordinates the ordering, inventorying, and maintenance of lab supplies, tools, equipment. Must be able to effectively communicate and demonstrate knowledge of specific technical skills in the lab to a diverse student population. Must have the ability to collaborate with students and peers in order to establish an environment where safety is not compromised. The successful candidate will be an advocate for shop safety and be very familiar with Personal Protective Equipment and safe industrial practices.

*This position may require evening and weekend hours.

Required Qualifications:

• Associate’s Degree in a related field OR High School Diploma/GED and one or both of the following, 1 year relevant industry work experience in a licensed automotive repair facility or some related college coursework.
• Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, Database, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

• ASE Certifications in G1, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7 and/or A8
• Documented industry recognized (NATEF) training (current)
