Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Officiates intramural contests according to rules, mechanics and sportsmanship standards.
  • Pre-game checks of playing area, equipment, roster, and participant eligibility.
  • Applies rules and penalties consistently and communicates calls clearly.
  • Maintains positioning, awareness, and game control throughout contests.
  • Promotes safety and stops play when risks arise.
  • Reports injuries, misconduct, or hazards to supervisor.
  • Completes scoresheets, game reports, and incident documentation.
  • Assists with setup, equipment distribution, transitions, and breakdown.
  • Participates in required training, evaluations, and meetings.

Responsibilities

Position SummaryThe Part-Time Intramural Official supports safe, fair, and enjoyable intramural competition by applying sport rules, managing game flow and participant conduct, communicating decisions clearly, and completing required game documentation. The Official works within assigned training and receives ongoing feedback to strengthen consistency and judgment.

Essential Duties

  • Officiates assigned intramural contests in accordance with program rules, mechanics, and sportsmanship standards
  • Arrives prepared and on time and completes required pregame checks of the playing area, equipment, roster, and participant eligibility process
  • Applies rules and penalties consistently and communicates calls and decisions clearly
  • Maintains appropriate positioning, awareness, and game control throughout each contest
  • Promotes participant safety and stops play when conditions, equipment, behavior, or injuries create an unacceptable risk
  • Manages routine questions, disagreements, and participant behavior professionally and seeks supervisor assistance when escalation is needed
  • Reports injuries, misconduct, ejections, protests, hazards, and unusual situations to the supervisor
  • Completes scoresheets, game reports, incident documentation, and other assigned records accurately
  • Assists with setup, equipment distribution, game transitions, and breakdown as assigned
  • Participates in required rules instruction, mechanics training, evaluations, meetings, and development activities
  • Demonstrates neutrality, professionalism, and respect toward participants, coworkers, and spectators
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous officiating, coaching, playing, or intramural experience
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications
Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work SchedulePart-time schedule with hours varying based on the intramural calendar and assigned contests. Evening, weekend, and tournament availability may be required.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor recreation, aquatic, fitness, customer-service, office, and activity spaces as assigned.
  • The environment may include moderate to loud noise, changing temperatures, humidity, wet surfaces, crowds, and exposure to cleaning products or outdoor weather conditions.
  • The position regularly interacts with patrons, students, guests, coworkers, vendors, and client representatives.
  • Work may occur during early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • The work environment described is representative of conditions encountered while performing the essential duties of the position.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and move throughout assigned work areas for varying portions of the shift.
  • Frequently communicates with and exchanges accurate information with patrons, participants, staff, guests, and emergency responders.
  • Frequently uses hands and fingers to operate equipment, computers, radios, telephones, point-of-sale devices, or other tools required by the assignment.
  • Occasionally bends, reaches, kneels, crouches, pushes, pulls, and moves supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequently runs, jogs, changes direction, stands, bends, and moves for extended periods on indoor or outdoor playing surfaces
  • Must be able to visually follow play and hear and communicate signals, calls, and instructions in moderate-to-loud competitive environments
  • Must be able to respond promptly to emergency situations and perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
