The incumbent reports to the Associate Dean – School of Health Sciences and supports college service activities while upholding the college's commitment to equity and student

Qualifications

• Technical diploma in Medical Coding and one of the following coding certifications: AAPC or AHIMA
• Associate’s degree in health information technology within three (3) years of hire
• Certification as a RHIT within three (3) years of hire
• Two (2) years or 4,000 hours of related work experience

Responsibilities

• Instruct the Medical Coding Specialist program including Foundations of Health Information Management, Health Care Reimbursement and Management of Coding Services.
• Develop and plan instructional strategies and delivery methods including hybrid, face-to-face and online course delivery.
• Participate in in-service meetings, convocation training, staff development training or related activities requested by the Department.
• Advise students on assignments, tests, grades, course content, career concerns, and other academic matters.
• Maintain office hours for student assistance and counseling and ensure timely grading and record-keeping.
• Maintain competencies as an instructor per the Faculty Quality Assurance System.
• Assist students in developing work experience assignments such as internships and team projects.
• Maintain RHIA or RHIT certification as required.
• Demonstrate commitment to the college's mission, vision and values.

Medical Coding Specialist Program Instructor

Organizational Function and Responsibilities: This position is responsible for instruction in the Medical Coding Specialist program at the college level. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, division and college levels.

This position reports to the Associate Dean – School of Health Sciences.

Essential Duties:

• Responsible for instruction in the Medical Coding Specialist program including but not limited to the following courses or curriculum area: Foundations of Health Information Management, Health Care Reimbursement and Management of Coding Services.
• Develop and plan appropriate instructional strategies and alternative delivery strategies when appropriate including but not limited to hybrid, face-to-face and on-line course delivery.
• Participate in in-service meetings, convocation training, staff development training or other activities or programs requested by the Department.
• Assist and advise students who have problems with assignments, tests, grades, course content, career concerns, and other academic matters.
• Comply with college policies and directions regarding student testing, record keeping, advanced standing, providing grades on a timely basis, evaluating student performance and maintaining office hours for student assistance and counseling, etc.
• Maintain competencies as an instructor as aligned with the Faculty Quality Assurance System.
• Assist students in developing work experience assignments such as internships, work study assignments, team projects, etc.
• Maintain Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification.
• Demonstrate a commitment to the college's mission, vision and values.

• Knowledge of current educational methods and strategies, including learner-centered instruction, assessment, evaluation and collaborative techniques and strategies that address closing the gap in student access and achievement across race, gender and disability.

Qualifications:

• Expectation to obtain an Associate's degree in health information technology within three (3) years of hire.
• Expectation to obtain certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) within three (3) years of hire.
• Two (2) years or 4,000 hours of related work experience.
