Job description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical instruction to Associate Degree and/or Practical Nursing students.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

• Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the Coordinator of Associate Degree Nursing
• May occasionally receive general supervision from full-time instructional staff
• May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENT:

• Conducts clinical laboratory so as to meet program/course/clinical outcomes; assists the Course Coordinator/team member in scheduling clinical activities as indicated.
• Apprises unit personnel of student/client assignments.
• Prepares for clinical experience as evidenced by familiarity with unit policies, clients and their needs, student clinical outcomes, and students.
• Provides orientation, assistance, and guidance to students during the clinical experience on the unit.
• Notifies specified person (e.g., Course Coordinator, team member, Department Chair) of illness, emergency, or anticipated absence as early as such absence is known.
• Remains with assigned students throughout the entire clinical experience, including hospital in-service programs, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Coordinator or team member.
• Conducts pre- and post-conference with students according to course/clinical outcomes.
• Utilizes approved assessment forms and clinical evaluation criteria/tools according to instructions given to provide continuity and consistency for the student.
• Completes evaluation tools for each student and schedules individual conferences at least mid-semester and at the end of each semester; evaluates students fairly on the basis of program criteria; shares ongoing evaluation with students and Coordinator/team member timely and constructively
• Makes suggestions to Course Coordinator regarding clinical experiences, outcomes, evaluation process, and other areas of interest and concern.
• Remains current in clinical and professional expertise through clinical practice, attendance at workshops/classes, and other activities.
• Provide classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical instruction to students.
• Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom and clinical activities; develop and prepare supplemental materials
• Develop and prepare tests and other tools to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
• Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
• Participate in curriculum development, implementation, evaluation and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance; maintain other records and data bases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
• Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines

Other Important Functions:

• Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various text books and select books to be used for future classes.
• Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate.
• Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progression and qualifications for graduation (required activity for all nursing faculty).
• Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substances such as blood borne pathogens; continually undergo training and train students in such procedures (required for all nursing faculty).
• Demonstrate community involvement (required for all ADN nursing faculty).
• Participate in functions related to the implementation of the systematic plan for evaluation.
• Participate in all functions related to implementation of the programs systematic plan for evaluation.
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

• Classroom, laboratory, and clinical instructional techniques and procedures.
• Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Minimum Education/Training:

Faculty of the Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing Program shall be qualified as stated in the North Carolina Administrative Code:

21 NCAC 36.0318 Faculty

Each nurse faculty member shall hold a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina.

Nursing faculty who teach in a program leading to initial licensure as a nurse shall:

1. hold either a baccalaureate in nursing or a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution;
2. if employed after December 31, 1983, have two calendar years or the equivalent of full time clinical experience as a registered nurse;
3. prior to or within the first three years of employment, have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment. This preparation may be demonstrated by one of the following:
   • A). completion of 45 contact hours of continuing education courses;
   • B). completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
   • C).nine semester hours of education coursework;
   • D). national certification in nursing education; or
   • E). documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the Board. Criteria for approval include content in the faculty role within the curriculum implementation, objectives to be met and evaluated, review of strategies for identified student population and expectations of student and faculty performance;
4. by December 31, 2010, all current faculty shall meet the requirements in Subparagraph (e)(3) of this Rule;
5. maintain competence in the areas of assigned responsibility; and
6. have current knowledge of nursing practice for the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse.

The nurse faculty member in a program preparing individuals for registered nurse practice who has primary responsibility, designated by the program, for coordinating the planning, implementation, and evaluation, of each major clinical nursing course shall hold a master’s degree. This nurse faculty member shall also have had a minimum of one academic year of full-time teaching experience in a nursing program.

License or Certificate

• For nursing faculty, current, unrestricted licensing as a registered nurse in North Carolina is required.

Minimum Experience

• For nursing faculty, a minimum of two calendar years prior full-time employment or the equivalent in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills

• Master’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.
• Prior experience in teaching nursing education is preferred.
