Job summary

Job description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom instruction to students with IDD in CFCC’s Adult Basic Education program, STRIDE through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions and testing. Must be familiar with ABE curriculum. Assist students in developing employability and post-secondary preparatory skills.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
  • Receives direct supervision from Special Programs Director
  • Exercises no supervision
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENT:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide classroom instruction to students in reading, math, computer literacy and employability skills.
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
  • Conduct class field trips to visit employers, CFCC educational programs, and community resources.
  • Drive a school vehicle (non-CDL requiring vehicle) to take the STRIDE students on field trips.
  • Provide classroom instruction using the IDD curriculum.
  • Assist STRIDE Assessment Retention Specialist with identifying and developing career pathway plans for students based on their individual interests and abilities.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines.
Other Important Functions:
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson formats as needed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration
Ability To:
  • Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  • Making observations
  • Reading and writing

  • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

    4. Bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    1. Making sound decisions

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Minimum Education/Training:
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Valid NC driver’s license with driving record that is within the parameters set by the college.
Minimum Experience:
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Experience with IDD population.
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Prior experience in Adult Education is desirable.
