Job summary

Qualifications

Job Overview

The Psychologist III – Forensic Evaluator performs advanced psychological work, including competency evaluations (46B, Chapter 55), violence risk assessments (46C), and forensic psychological assessments. The role supports forensic programs, provides expert testimony, and supervises trainees under the direction of the State Hospital Medical Director.

Responsibilities

• Conduct forensic evaluations of competency to stand trial and violence risk assessments.
• Develop, support, and coordinate forensic psychological activities and programs.
• Provide consultation, training, and guidance on forensic evaluations to hospital staff and courts.
• Design, conduct, and coordinate forensic activities, ensuring compliance with state policies and evidence‑based standards.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop treatment and rehabilitation plans.
• Provide expert testimony in legal proceedings.
• Maintain thorough documentation, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
• Lead quality improvement initiatives and forensic program development.
• Supervise work of others and graduate trainees.
• Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activations as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of forensic psychological assessment and treatment of seriously mentally ill forensic populations.
• Knowledge of psychotherapy modalities such as CBT, DBT, and behavior therapy.
• Skills in using psychological instruments (MMPI, HCR-20, VRAG, TOMM, MFAST, SIRS).
• Ability to conduct assessments, write clear reports, and provide expert testimony.
• Ability to provide direct services in accordance with professional standards.
• Ability to function as a member of the psychology management team.
• Ability to educate staff on implementation of therapy programs.
• Ability to operate computers and applicable software.
• Ability to train and supervise others.

Licensing & Certification

Must be licensed as a Psychologist in Texas or a reciprocity state.

Initial Screening Criteria

• Doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited institution.
• One year of supervised experience by a licensed psychologist.
• One year experience conducting forensic and standard psychological assessments in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
• One year experience providing individual and group psychotherapy to forensic populations in an inpatient psychiatric setting.

Eligibility & Application

All applicants must be at least 18 years old; the Waco and Terrell Center for Youth applicants must be 21. Applicants must pass required background checks, drug screening, and registry checks. Males aged 18‑25 must register with Selective Service.

Employment Conditions

Full‑time, exempt, day shift. Up to 10% travel and occasional overtime or extended hours. Telework not eligible.
