Job description

The VA Northern California Health Care System (NCHCS) is currently recruiting for full-time, board eligible/board certified psychiatrists who are value-driven, recovery- and diversity-oriented, and possess energy, compassion, and a pursuit of excellence to join our team at various Northern CA VA Outpatient Clinic locations. The physician will conduct review of medical history, physical exams, and mental status exams; complete assessments and formulate diagnoses; develop treatment plans; and order labs and/or radiological assessments for a wide variety of mental disorders, through a multidisciplinary team approach. The Psychiatrist is responsible for the medication management of patients as indicated in the treatment plan as well as facilitation of medication support groups, evaluating and providing medical clearance for patients presenting to the clinic who may need psychiatric hospitalization, and assessment and intervention for patients presenting in crisis.

At this time, only candidates interested in onsite delivery of care will be considered. This is not a remote or virtual assignment.

Salary Range: $250,000-$320,000


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm; Alternate Tour of duty may be required to include evening hours and weekends.

On-Call: Weeknight and weekend telephone and on-site/virtual on-call duties for the Behavioral Health Intensive Care Unit (BHICU) at the Sacramento VA Medical Center or David Grant Medical Center, Travis AFB. On-call rotations last one week, can be conducted from home, and are usually Friday-Thursdays, including weekends and holidays. The rotations may include discussion of potential admissions to the inpatient psychiatric unit, evaluating patients requiring seclusion and restraint, evaluating emergent psychiatric consults on the medical/surgical, and rounding on the inpatient psychiatric unit during weekends and holidays. Psychiatrists generally are on-call three to five times per year depending on site.


Candidates must:

  1. be a US citizen or PRA (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with [38 U.S.C. 7407(a)]);
  2. possess a current, full, unrestricted medical license in any state;
  3. be board certified in BE/BC Psychiatry;
  4. confirm vaccination for seasonal influenza.

Preferred experience: Board Certification in Psychiatry (or intention to take Board exam)

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year, and possible 5-day paid absence for CME)

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
