Job description

As a psychiatrist at the Utah State Hospital, you will be able to administer to the psychiatric care, treatment, and clinical needs of our patients.


As you establish and implement psychiatric treatment plans for our patients, a typical day at the Utah State Hospital may include:

  1. Conducting progress reviews of patients.
  2. Making diagnostic determinations and decisions regarding treatment plans.
  3. Providing diagnostic/therapeutic interventions.
  4. Prescribing and coordinating treatment plans with other therapy programs.

Psychiatrists at the Utah State Hospital must be licensed to practice medicine within the United States and the State of Utah. You must have attended an approved residency program (Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education). Additionally, you must be certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement therapy and treatment and/or refer client(s) to other sources of treatment.
  • Analyze and evaluate patient data or test findings to diagnose nature or extent of mental disorder.
  • Document client/patient progress and revise treatment plans as required; complete administrative paperwork.
  • Coordinate clinical activities and follow-up.
  • Act as a resource for management and staff; provide technical support within area of responsibility.
  • Consult with others to discuss treatment plans, new or unusual situations, findings, options, and recommendations on client/patient cases.
  • Write, implement, and provide documentation of individual client's treatment; maintain records to comply with federal requirements and write reports indicative of progress or regression.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and standards for mental health program services.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
  • Knowledge of different philosophical systems and religions. This includes their basic principles, values, ethics, ways of thinking, customs, practices, and their impact on human culture.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current license to practice medicine in the State of Utah (MD).
  • Awareness of risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g., working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
