The Assistant Chief of Psychiatry Service provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership to ensure the achievement of the Medical Center's clinical and educational goals related to Psychiatry Service at all sites of care within the Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BCVAMC) Health Care Delivery System. The role serves as a key clinical resource for the Medical Center Director and the Chief of Staff.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
- Degree of MD or equivalent from an approved medical school
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
- Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification
- Residents in approved training programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
- Proficiency in English
- Preferred: Board certification

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move freely; good body mechanics
- Good hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity
- Neat appearance and emotional stability
- Work involves clinical environments with physically and mentally ill patients, potential exposure to infectious diseases, and periodic travel
Duties
- Provide administrative and clinical support, improve processes, and serve as a liaison for inpatient discharges and mental health care coordination
- Supervise professional staff, participate in committees, and provide clinical care and oversight, including training residents and trainees
- Accountable to the Chief of Psychiatry Service and ACOS-MH for clinical program activities and compliance
- Deliver direct patient care across various mental health settings, including clinics, residential units, and inpatient units
- Plan and deliver patient-centered services, promote a culture aligned with VA values, and lead quality improvement initiatives
- Encourage continuing education, ensure compliance with standards, and foster professional development
- Assist in budget and fiscal management, develop initiatives to improve efficiency, and manage relationships with academic affiliates
- Lead organizational change, demonstrate core values, and ensure accountability and transparency
- Build and develop a competent team, manage human resources, and demonstrate leadership in ethical issues and communication systems
