Job description

Position Details: 10 hours/week

  • 1st, 3rd, and 5th Mondays 10:30am-2:30pm
  • 2nd and 4th Monday 10:30am - 4:30pm
  • All Wednesdays 10:30am- 2:30pm

Position Summary

The Corrections Psychiatrist will be responsible for the delivery of psychotherapy, diagnostic, and therapeutic services in a contract facility. The Psychiatrist will also act as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team and a liaison with other medical disciplines. The Psychiatrist diagnoses and treats patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, and organizes data concerning the patient’s family, medical history, and onset of symptoms obtained from the patient, relatives, and other sources, such as nurses and social workers. Examines patient to determine general physical condition, following standard medical procedures. Orders laboratory and other special diagnostic tests and evaluates data obtained. Determines nature and extent of mental disorder, and formulates treatment program. Treats or directs treatment of patients, utilizing a variety of psychotherapeutic methods and medications.

  • Attends all CFG Health Systems-related staff meetings.
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Completes required orientation and training directed by the facility.
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  • Follows facility and CFG Health Systems Occurrence Protocol.
  • Adheres to PREA and HIPPA regulations.
  • Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility.
  • Identified and utilized appropriate channels of communication with supervising staff.

Position Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents psychiatric assessments and evaluations on inmate patients referred by the nursing/professional staff of the assigned correctional facility consistent with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) standards of care, American Psychological Association (APA), NJ 10-A, American Correctional Association (ACA) and Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) as appropriate.
  • Provision of full range of psychiatric services to assigned patients. Services provided include direct care of patients in the clinical setting including: assessment, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of patients and determining the degree of disabilities in patients.
  • Analyze and evaluate patient data and test findings to diagnose nature and extent of mental disorder
  • In conjunction with the mental health director, supports and provides direction for the psychiatric and behavioral health care delivery system and coordinates with the other functions within the institution.
  • Meets regularly with the site mental health and medical staff for mental health issues as requested.
  • Prescribe, direct, and administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders as allowed by state regulations and under the guidelines of the approved CFG formulary.
  • Collaborate with physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress.
  • Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social and medical history obtained from patients, relatives, and other professionals.
  • Examine or conduct laboratory or diagnostic tests on patient to provide information on general physical condition and mental disorder
  • Participates in treatment team activities including the development and periodic review of patient treatment plans and will take necessary steps when a patient refuses treatment.
  • Conducts and reviews forensic evaluations
  • Follows and enforces security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.
  • Contributes to behavioral health program development, policies, and evaluation.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Promotes a therapeutic environment to ensure inmate patients are treated in a professional, ethical and tactful manner.
  • Confer with patient’s relatives regarding illness and treatments.
  • Collaborates with and supervises Advanced Practice Nurses.
  • Designate the level of care to be performed and the necessary equipment needed.
  • Subject to on-call responsibilities as assigned
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Education

  • Completion from an accredited medical school facility with an MD or DO degree
  • Completion of a US-based residency program in a mental health facility.
  • Current, unrestricted license to practice psychiatry in the state the facility is located in (maintain a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times) designated Forensic Evaluator preferred.

Minimum Work Experience

  • Experience with mental health delivery systems.
  • Experience in providing services in inpatient/outpatient environment.

  • Capable of preparing written reports and able to handle legal depositions and court hearings.
  • Maintains an active Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Must have an unrestricted and valid prescriptive authority with Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS).

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.
  • May be required to work nights, weekend, and holidays.
  • Provides 24 hour mental health consultation services to inmate patients in situations requiring immediate crisis intervention.
