Psychiatric Technician - Behavioral Health Sciences - Per Diem

Position Summary: The Psychiatric Technician in Behavioral Health provides direct patient care and support functions under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or Licensed Mental Health Worker. This position works as a member of the multidisciplinary Behavioral Health team. Participation in group and therapeutic activities is required. The Psychiatric Technician supports the philosophy of Robert Packer Hospital, The Nursing Division, and The Behavioral Health Unit. This position represents the hospital in a professional, courteous manner to patients/families and the healthcare team while being sensitive to how others perceive both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Education, License & Cert: Certification in CPI and RQI within six months of hire. Associate’s preferred.

Experience: Prefer two years of Psychiatric Technician or Care Partner experience.

Essential Functions:

  1. Facilitate group and therapeutic activities as assigned.
  2. Admit and discharge patients according to Behavioral Health protocol.
  3. Assist in the application of restraints according to policy.
  4. Participate in the delivery of patient care for patients of all age groups under the direction of the RN, including, but not limited to, toileting, feeding, washing hair, range of motion exercises, mobilizing patients, transfers, and ambulation.
  5. Transport patients, serve and retrieve trays, distribute water pitchers, and order and distribute nourishment.
  6. Perform and record temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressures, and weights for patients of all age groups.
  7. Inventory and assure disposition of patient’s belongings when admitted, discharged, or transferred.
  8. Obtain urine, stool, and sputum specimens for adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
  9. Administer cleansing, oil retention, and fleets enemas for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  10. Under the direction of RN, provide patient observation as designated constant, q 5 minutes, q 10 minutes, q 15 minutes, q 30 minutes. Assume assignment for ICA rotation as appropriate.

Other Duties:

  1. Assist with the orientation process of new division personnel.
  2. Attend and participate in unit council meetings.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of and act according to established safety protocols.
  4. Consistently utilize universal precaution techniques for all patient interactions.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
