Job summary

Great Plains Health is seeking a Psychiatric Technician to support the Behavioral Health Services team. The role involves assisting staff with therapeutic care for patients and families, performing safety checks, and supporting admissions and meals to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities include assisting with ADLs, medical vitals, and documenting care while maintaining a clean, safe unit. The position requires a high school diploma, BLS, CPI training, and oxygen certification within 6 months

Qualifications

• High school degree or equivalent is required.
• BLS certification is required.
• CPI training completion is required.
• Oxygen certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
• Update to be completed every 2 years.

Responsibilities

• Assists all patients with ADLs and daily living activities.
• Performs 15 minute safety checks on all patients.
• Performs room checks on all patients.
• Maintains unit cleanliness and neatness at all times.
• Assists with admission and discharge processes ensuring patient safety.
• Assists patients at meals with food trays and maintains safety during meals.
• Performs accu-checks and vital signs as needed.
• Follows directions from Charge Nurse and provides patient care as required.
• Intervenes verbally and physically with assaultive or self-harming patients.
• Documents in flow sheets and supports crisis intervention and behavior management.

Job Description

The psychiatric technician is responsible for assisting the staff in providing therapeutic specialized care for patients and their families and/or significant others.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school degree or equivalent required.
• BLS required.
• Completion of CPI training required.
• Oxygen certification (Medication Aide Training Hospital based) required within 6 months of hiring.
• Update to be completed every 2 years.

Physical Demands

• Stand and/or walk constantly.
• Sit frequently.
• Visual, hearing, and color vision within normal limits.
• Ability to physically help restrain a patient.
• Full bend and/or stoop frequently.
• Grip and/or pinch within normal limits.
• Lift 50 pounds occasionally.
• Carry 50 pounds occasionally.
• Reach floor-overhead frequently.
• Push and/or pull 10 pounds frequently.
• Fine motor coordination within normal limits.
• Computer use frequently.

Essential Functions

• Assists all patients with ADL's.
• Performs 15 minute safety checks on all patients.
• Performs room checks on all patients.
• Assists with keeping the unit clean and neat at all times.
• Assists with the admission and discharge process maintaining the safety of the patient.
• Assists patients at all meals with their food trays and maintains safety during meal times in the Dining Room.
• Performs accu-checks and Vital Signs as needed on patients.
• Performs patient care responsibilities as directed by the Charge Nurse.
• Intervenes verbally and physically with patients who are assaultive or attempting to harm themselves.
• Knowledge of crisis intervention, limit setting and behavior modification required.
• Documents in flow sheets: 15 minute checks, graphics, restraint flow sheets, I&D flow sheets, patient education and diabetic flow sheets.
• Assists recreational staff as needed in implementation of activities.
• Attends and participates in 75% of staff meetings.
• Attends 100% of mandatory trainings and in-services.
