Job Description: Psychiatric Nurse at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital

For over 70 years, UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital has been a leader in mental health and addiction treatment, collaborating with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. We are committed to providing state-of-the-art training and care.

We are seeking a dedicated full-time Psychiatric Nurse to support our Resource Pool at the Oakland location. The position involves Day/Night rotation with 8 and 12-hour shifts.

Starting Rate: GN level candidate at $33.25/hour, BSN at $34.75/hour. The rate may be increased based on previous nursing experience.

Responsibilities:
  1. Perform nursing assessments and initial care plans within 8 hours of patient admission, including patient education about hospitalization.
  2. Document care in accordance with established policies.
  3. Maintain current knowledge of medication policies, side effects, dosages, and patient responses.
  4. Administer medications safely and accurately, including transcription, administration, and documentation.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of DSM IV diagnoses through therapeutic interventions.
  6. Manage crisis situations effectively, adhering to Nursing Standards, ANA standards, policies, and the Nurse Practice Act.
  7. Conduct point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose monitoring, urinalysis).
  8. Perform charge RN responsibilities competently.
  9. Participate in program development and performance improvement activities.
  10. Engage in interdisciplinary activities, including treatment teams and staff meetings.
  11. Follow research protocols as required.
  12. Maintain competency requirements and attend in-services.
  13. Mentor students and new employees.
  14. Utilize up-to-date technology in patient care.
  15. Perform according to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
