For over 70 years, UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital has been a leader in mental health and addiction treatment, working in conjunction with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to provide state-of-the-art training and care.

Position: Psychiatric Staff Nurse

Location: Oakland, 3rd Floor

The role supports the General Adult / Behavioral Health ICU (7th Floor), which includes:

1. A 24-bed inpatient behavioral unit serving individuals in acute crisis with various diagnoses such as Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders.
2. A 7-bed Behavioral Health ICU designed for patients in a severely acute phase of psychiatric illness, responsive to pharmacotherapy.

This position offers day/evening shifts with both 8 and 12-hour options.

Starting Rate:

GN level candidate: $33.25/hr (BSN $34.75/hr)

Rate may be increased based on previous nursing experience.

Responsibilities include:

• Conducting nursing assessments and care planning within 8 hours of admission, and educating patients about hospitalization.
• Documenting in medical records per policies.
• Maintaining knowledge of medication policies, side effects, dosages, and patient responses.
• Administering medications safely and accurately.
• Applying DSM IV diagnoses in therapeutic interventions.
• Managing crisis situations effectively, adhering to nursing standards and policies.
• Performing point-of-care testing (glucose, urinalysis, Hemocults).
• Performing charge RN responsibilities competently.
• Participating in program development, performance improvement, and interdisciplinary activities.
• Following research protocols and maintaining competency requirements.
• Attending in-services and mentoring new staff.
• Utilizing current technology in patient care.
• Adhering to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
