Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care—Department of Nursing seeks a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant to support the Nursing team in providing patient care under RN supervision. 7RC unit emphasizes evidence-based, patient-centered care with behavioral health initiatives.

Schedule includes 4-, 8-, and 12-hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays; 90-100% time; part-time appointments available. Opportunities include merit-based pay and comprehensive benefits for Iowa City campus positions.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
• Experience defusing volatile situations is desirable.
• Previous patient care in mental health setting is favorable.

Responsibilities

• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients, families and multidisciplinary team.
• Participate in planning patient care appropriate for patient’s condition and age.
• Document patient behavior factually; report to the registered nurse.
• Maintain patient safety and confidentiality; follow Standard precautions.
• Supervise patients during activities; report and intervene in crises.
• Assist with personal hygiene: bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care.
• Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
• Prepare rooms for patient admission and transport patients/equipment as needed.
• Stock and supply patient rooms and unit; clean bedside areas.
• Perform basic CPR as required.
