Job summary

Boston Children's Hospital is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner for per diem shifts in the emergency department. Responsibilities include psychiatric assessments, medication management, and coordination with social work for treatment planning and disposition decisions.

The role requires an MSN, Massachusetts NP licensure, and ANCC Psychiatric NP certification, with weekend morning coverage and 4–6 hour shifts during peak winter season.

Qualifications

  • MSN degree required.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience performing psychiatric evaluations and psychopharmacology services as a NP.
  • Massachusetts licensure as Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse and ANCC Psychiatric NP certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide psychiatric assessments and risk assessments for ED patients.
  • Perform medication reconciliation; review prior trials and prescribe meds as appropriate in ED.
  • Coordinate with social work for treatment planning and level-of-care decisions.
  • Develop and implement agitation management plans and obtain collateral information for boarding patients.
  • Attend rounds with the ED Psychiatry team and coordinate care for ED boarding patients.
  • Support nursing and medical teams, including the Behavioral Response Team, in de-escalation and safety measures.
  • Collaborate with supervising physician and social work for disposition and continuity of care.

Position Summary / Department Summary:

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Per Diem

Key Responsibilities:
  • Providing individualized care for patients. Includes conducting thorough psychiatric assessments, including risk assessment and reviewing past medical history
  • Performing medication reconciliation, reviewing prior medication trials, and prescribing medications as appropriate, ensuring safety and efficacy in the emergency setting
  • Coordinates with social work team to conduct treatment planning and recommendations for level of care decision making
  • Recommending observation levels, creating and implementing agitation plans, and obtaining collateral information for patients boarding in the emergency department.
  • Attending morning rounds, as representative of the ED Psychiatry team, with the medical team and charge nurse to review and coordinate plans for patients boarding in the emergency department.
  • Attend EPS team meetings
  • Supporting the nursing staff, the medical team and the Behavioral Response Team in treating ED patients with acute agitation and unsafe behaviors using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological de-escalation techniques
  • Collaborating with supervising physician and social work to ensure appropriate disposition and continuity of care as well as contacting collaterals upon discharge/transfer
  • Maintaining accurate and timely documentation
  • Ensuring compliance with ethical principles, confidentiality laws and regulations governing psychiatric healthcare
  • Working Saturday and Sunday mornings, working between 4-6 hour shifts depending on season (peak season is winter)
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • A Master of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN)
Experience
  • At least 1 year of professional experience performing psychiatric evaluations and psychopharmacology services as a NP
Licensure / Certifications
  • Massachusetts licensure as Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse.
  • ANCC certification as a Psychiatric NP

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.

Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
