Job description

General Statement of Duties:

Persons in this position provide a range of specialized medical diagnostic and treatment services within his/her prescriptive authority for child and adult clients. PNPs in this position work under the supervision of the Chief Psychiatrist or Executive Director.

Major Essential Functions:
  • Conducts psychiatric evaluations and assessments for child and/or adult clients.
  • Diagnoses patient illnesses and carries out the necessary psychiatric treatment program.
  • Promptly documents services as required by State and Federal laws and agency regulations and/or requirements.
  • Meets agency standards for staff productivity.
  • Provides consultation and coordination of services with case managers and other agency staff.
  • May provide crisis intervention and emergency assessments.
  • Coordinates care with other healthcare professionals; and may provide consultative services to other professionals.
  • May provide services to off-site clientele (e.g., to inmates at the regional jail).
  • Participates with other prescribers to manage requirements under the CSB's alternate delivery site pharmacy license.
  • Works collaboratively with agency Medical Practice Manager to monitor caseload numbers and productivity needs.
  • Coordinates leave schedules with other CSB physicians/NPs and works cooperatively with other CSB prescribers to provide backup coverage as needed during absences.
  • Maintains effective relationships with co-workers and customers based on courtesy, compassion, and respect.
  • Makes effective use of available technology, including computers, e-mail, and voice mail in order to enhance customer service.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned, consistent with agency policies and procedures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of community behavioral health treatment services, and demonstrated interest in serving individuals with serious mental illness and/or serious emotional disturbance; knowledge of treatment protocols for individuals with a co-occurring intellectual disability and/or substance use disorder; thorough knowledge of the principles of recovery; ability to provide professional treatment services consistent with professional licensing in Virginia; ability to write concisely and effectively; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated good judgment.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Incumbent must have a Masters of Science in Nursing, and have graduated from an accredited program for nurse practitioners. He/she must show current certification and/or licensure as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and in Nursing. He/she must possess and maintain current licensure and prescriptive authority in the Commonwealth of Virginia and with the DEA. At least two years of experience in a mental health treatment setting is preferred including autonomous prescribing in the Commonwealth of VA. Staff member is responsible for submitting proof of license renewal to the Human Resources office.

Work Environment: General office environment with standard lighting levels, temperature ranges, air quality, ventilation, and noise levels.

Work Location: 1241 N. Main St. office

Work Hazards: Standard hazards associated with human service and/or behavioral health office environment; occasional hazards associated with problem behaviors and necessary use of medical procedures. Use of universal precautions required.

Work Schedule: Office hours as defined in letter of employment; additional hours as needed to fulfill job requirements. Regular attendance is required.
