Job summary

Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is seeking a Nurse I (Staff Nurse) at Big Spring State Hospital. The role involves performing entry‑level to routine psychiatric nursing duties under supervision, conducting comprehensive patient assessments, and developing initial care plans.

Responsibilities include administering medications, maintaining records, and training staff. The position may require evening, night, or weekend shifts and potential COOP activation.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited nursing program or university with nursing major.
• Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Texas or with reciprocity.
• Ability to pass background checks and immunization policy requirements.

Responsibilities

• Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a rotating schedule, extended shifts, or overtime.
• Performs comprehensive assessment of patients’ nursing care needs, including physical, behavioral, psychiatric, and social needs.
• Documents observations and reports to the treatment team and attending psychiatrist as needed.
• Contributes to the development and execution of the individualized recovery plan with the team.
• Administers medications and maintains MAR and controlled drug records per policy.
• Trains other staff in psychiatric nursing principles and milieu management.
• Monitors and maintains a safe, therapeutic environment and participates in disaster response or COOP activations.
