Psychiatrist – Section Chief of Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Practice Highlights

The Supervisory Psychiatrist - Inpatient Section functions as a section chief within Behavioral Health Service for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. As the Inpatient Section Chief, the incumbent is the discipline lead responsible for all professional aspects related to the Inpatient Patient section. S/he assists the ACOS of Behavioral Health and Chief Psychiatrist in the overall operation of Behavioral Health Service and has direct supervisory responsibility over the Inpatient section.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Serves as the Chief Psychiatrist of a 2-floor, 52-bed Behavioral Health Unit.
  2. Serves as a member of the Behavioral Health leadership team.
  3. Responsible for oversight of inpatient psychiatric services.
  4. Supervises 3 Psychiatrists, 2 CRNPs, and Physician Assistants; manages proficiency reports, personnel actions, recruitment, retention, and staff training.
  5. Ensures quality, safety, and value of psychiatric services through ongoing evaluations, medical records reviews, and supporting evidence-based practices.
  6. Collaborates with nursing, social work, creative arts, chaplaincy, and other professionals to ensure optimal Veteran care.
  7. Participates in behavioral health leadership meetings and hospital committees.
  8. Conducts psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning.
  9. Oversees clinical psychiatric care on the inpatient unit, including intake and discharge processes.
  10. Ensures SOPs, policies, procedures, and regulations are current.
  11. Provides psychiatric treatment to Veterans, recruits, students, active duty personnel, dependents, and retirees.
  12. Manages medication and conducts fitness for duty evaluations.
  13. Engages in psychiatry resident education and teaching activities.
  14. Participates in peer review, performance improvement, and research activities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Performs psychiatric evaluations for diverse populations, including geriatric and post-deployment combat Veterans with psychosocial issues.
  2. Provides diagnostic assessment, medication management, suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, and overall psychiatric care.
  3. Ensures practices adhere to TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies, clinical guidelines, and regulations.
  4. Offers psycho-diagnostic services and appropriate psychotherapeutic interventions.
  5. May serve as a mental health team leader, coordinating consults and referrals.
  6. Participates in team meetings, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  7. Orders diagnostics, interprets findings, and makes treatment decisions.
  8. May supervise and teach residents, perform on-call duties, and other related tasks.
  9. Practices may include managing depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and other disorders in inpatient settings.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO
  • US-based residency or ECFMG certification with five years of US practice experience
Preferred Experience

Competent in managing a broad range of clinical problems including PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders.

Working Hours

M-F 8:00am - 4:30pm with on-call responsibilities.
