Job summary

Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH is seeking a Charge Nurse for night shift (7pm–7am), 0.75 FTE (30 hours/week). You will supervise a shift, ensure patient care quality, and act as an EPIC Super User to support staff and operations.

Required BSN, current Ohio nursing license and BLS certification. Two years of nursing experience is preferred; weekend shifts are included with premium pay of $50.80 per hour.

Job Description Summary

The Charge Nurse plans, directs, and evaluates the overall patient care and functions in a particular area during an assigned shift. Serves as a role model to positively influence culture and work environment. Practices professional nursing and promotes patient advocacy in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinates the activities of a particular shift and directs, organizes, and assigns work to the employees.
  • Ensures adequate supplies, equipment, and utilization of staff.
  • Serves as an expert EPIC Super User.
  • Assesses, monitors, and supports employees throughout the shift.
  • Facilitates direct patient care through coaching, delegation, and service recovery.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Engages in the “workplace community” by staying aware of changes, participating in data collection or auditing, understanding Quality Improvement, and representing staff at relevant meetings, then reporting important information and updates back to staff.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Institutes emergency responses as appropriate.
  • Maintains quality and safety as a priority.
  • Specifies the critical resources required to accomplish the team's objectives.
  • Makes appropriate staffing decisions with understanding and consideration of workload targets and budget impact.
Education Requirement

BSN, required.

Licensure Requirement

Current Ohio Nursing License, required.

Certifications

BLS, required.

Experience

2 years nursing experience, preferred.

Physical Requirements

OCCASIONALLY: Biohazard waste, climbing stairs/ladder, cold temperatures, electricity, fume/gases/vapors, hot temperatures, lifting/carrying 61‑100 lbs, loud noises, machinery, power tools, pushing/pulling 100 lbs or greater with assistance, reaching above shoulder, working at heights, working outdoors.
FREQUENTLY: Bend/twist, blood and/or bodily fluids, chemicals/medications, communicable diseases and/or pathogens, flexing/extending of neck, hand use (grasping, gripping, turning), lifting/carrying 0‑10 lbs, lifting/carrying 11‑20 lbs, patient equipment, pushing/pulling 0‑25 lbs, pushing/pulling 26‑40 lbs, sitting, squatting/kneeling, standing, walking.
CONTINUOUSLY: Audible speech, color vision, computer skills, decision making, depth perception, hearing acuity, interpreting data, peripheral vision, problem solving, repetitive hand/arm use, seeing – far/near.
