Job description

Psychiatric triage for all levels of care for McLean Hospital units on and off site, certain McLean affiliates, MGB facilities, and capitated contracts. Provides teaching functions for all evaluating clinicians regarding payers and precertification requirements, as well as a teaching/consulting role to junior psychiatric triage staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS
  1. Facilitates inpatient admission for psychiatric and substance abuse referrals across four campuses 24/7/365.
    • Interviews the patient, family member, or referring professional to obtain clinical and demographic data following established admission procedures. (Weight: 25%)
    • Reviews EPIC records for patients being referred within MGB, including clinical, medical, and ED timelines.
    • Triages urgent and emergent calls to appropriate levels of care, including referral of patients in crisis to emergency rooms or contacting 911 when at immediate risk.
    • Responds promptly to preadmission inquiries and interacts courteously with patients, families, and professionals.
    • Reviews complex cases with supervisory or departmental staff as needed.
  2. Provides MGB-wide bed search following established triage procedures.
    • Reviews clinical and financial information in EPIC to make appropriate referrals based on clinical needs and managed care contracts.
    • Provides after-hours bed finding for BWH, BWF, MGH.
    • Acts as a resource regarding services and bed availability within MGB.
    • Provides psychiatric triage for Franciscan's Children's Hospital inpatient.
    • Handles inquiries regarding services at McLean and affiliates, supporting public relations.
  3. Reassesses census and bed availability continually.
    • Assigns patients to appropriate units based on census, clinical presentation, and contract requirements.
    • Monitors and updates electronic bed boards to reflect real-time census, admissions, and discharges.
    • Provides clinical information and expected time of arrival to units and discharges patients timely, reflecting changes accurately.
  4. Completes financial screening according to procedures.
    • Verifies insurance coverage, interprets data for special procedures or co-payments, and completes precertification when needed.
    • Reviews financial info with Patient Financial Services or Director of Intake for approval.
  5. Enters patient information into EPIC accurately and completely.
    • Enters demographic, referral, financial, and visit level information, ensuring no duplicate MRNs.
    • Prints wristbands, labels, and face sheets as required.
  6. Maintains confidentiality and contributes to department operations.
    • Follows confidentiality policies, secures files, and assists in training new staff.
    • Suggests operational improvements and communicates availability for additional duties.
  7. Completes admitting paperwork.
    • Collects deposits, completes release forms, and notifies relevant parties of admissions.
  8. Interacts professionally with hospital staff.
    • Communicates effectively with coworkers and hospital staff, maintaining professionalism and positive interactions.
