GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: This position of Crane Operator is responsible for all operating functions listed below. Operation of the crane unit must be understood comprehensively, with a focus on utilizing the equipment to meet all quality and productivity goals as outlined in our quality system. All work instructions must be followed as outlined.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Listed below are the primary activities which must be learned, understood, and followed according to work instructions. The process engineer/supervisor, Group Leader, and Shift Leaders will monitor each person and provide necessary instructions or guidance during training.

  • Ensure all crane parts are in proper working order and set points are correct as per work instructions. Make adjustments if necessary.
  • Operate the vacuum crane to remove plates from the line and perform other crane operations in the plate shop.
  • Operate overhead crane.
  • Package all materials processed through the line, assisted by temporary personnel when permitted.
  • Have basic knowledge of the functions of the pickling line.
  • Visually inspect plates during transfer to ensure proper chemical pickling; identify possible defects during pickling and shear processes.
  • Check plate measurements (width, length, thickness) and coordinate with shear operator.
  • Obtain and verify weight and stencil ID number of each plate; attach barcode tags and log details on tracking sheets.
  • Operate shear to achieve top pay level (4).
  • Inspect black plates as necessary.
  • Follow all safety rules, perform housekeeping and maintenance as assigned, and undertake any other tasks assigned by supervisors.

SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Communicate effectively with team members during daily operations.
  • Follow the chain of command: Turn Leader, Group Leader, Process Engineer/Supervisor, Department Manager.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED, basic computer skills, and strong communication skills.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Mobility: Standing (stationary) 25%, standing/walking 40%, walking 30%, sitting 5%.
  • Strength and agility: Ability to lift 50 lbs, carry 15 lbs, push/pull 50 lbs, climb, balance, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, run, twist, and turn.
  • Dexterity: Grasping, handling, reaching.
  • Must communicate and read in English; vision test required.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts (days/nights).

HEALTH AND SAFETY:

  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Follow safety rules, report unsafe conditions or equipment issues immediately.
  • Use all required PPE: safety shoes, glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, gloves, sleeves, PPE for acid handling, etc.
  • Follow Lockout/Tagout procedures and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
