Job summary

Merge Labs in San Francisco is seeking a Protein Engineer - Biosensors to design, build, and optimize proteins translating neuronal activity into interpretable imaging signals. You will work with unconventional proteins, including multi-component assemblies, and collaborate with our computational team to push biosensor performance forward.

You will develop high-throughput workflows, express in mammalian cells, and test designs with standard and custom assays.

Qualifications

• PhD in Bioengineering, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or equivalent research leadership.
• Experience with biosensors or proteins with novel functionality.
• Proficient in library construction and protein expression in mammalian cells.
• Familiar with computational protein engineering approaches.
• Strong mechanistic thinking and biophysical intuition.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement biosensor engineering strategies to push sensor performance.
• Build and characterize protein variants at high throughput in vitro and in cell systems.
• Collaborate with ML team to link sequences to function and guide future designs.
• Explore mechanisms of complex biomolecules and translate into new constructs.
• Develop novel screening and validation methods for design-build-iterate loop.
