Job summary

Bon Secours Mercy Health is seeking a Protective Services Officer to provide internal and external safety and security for our facilities. You will respond to routine and emergency calls, participate in investigations, and support a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Responsibilities include patrols, escort duties, enforcing policies, monitoring CCTV, and documenting incidents. Requires a high school diploma or GED; BLS within 6 months of hire; 1–2 years of security experience

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational/technical degree preferred.
  • Experience in safety, security, or law enforcement is beneficial.
  • BLS Basic Life Support certification required within 6 months of hire.

  • Protects patients, visitors and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environment of care safety hazards.
  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property including parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies such as parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco-free/smoking policies.
  • Monitors hospital activity on CCTV to detect escalating situations requiring protective services involvement.
  • Intervenes in patient, visitor and staff confrontations as appropriate.
  • Documents all duties performed, including daily activity logs and incident reports.

Protective Services officers are assigned to an area and respond to radio and/or telephone calls for routine and/or emergency assistance.

Essential Functions
  • Protects patients, visitors and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environment of care safety hazards.
  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property to include all parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies e.g. parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco free/smoking policy.
  • Monitors hospital activity on closed circuit television to be alerted to any escalating situations that may require protective services involvement.
  • Intervenes in patient, visitor and/or staff confrontations as appropriate.
  • Documents all duties performed to include completion of daily activity logs and incident reports.

Education
  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Vocational/Technical Degree (preferred)
Required Licensing & Certifications

  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required within 6 months of hire)
Experience
  • 1-2 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred)
Skills & Abilities
Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills
  • Basic skills using Microsoft Word
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (e.g., batons, handcuffs, body-worn cameras, soft restraints), in alignment with healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
  • Maintain strong technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software, with the ability to accurately document incidents and coordinate effectively with clinical teams and law enforcement.
Soft/Interpersonal Skills
  • Effective Communication, Active Listening, Empathy, Conflict Resolution
Range

Minimum: $18.11

Maximum: $27.17

Training
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (Required within 6 months of hire)
