Job summary

National Electrical Engineering Consultants (NEEC) LLC is seeking a Protection & Control Technician to install, wire, test, and maintain high-voltage substation protection and control systems in field environments.

This role requires travel to project sites nationwide and close collaboration with commissioning engineers to verify relays, interlocks, and SCADA interfaces per design specs and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2–5 years of P&C field testing, relay maintenance, or substation operations.
• Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical Engineering Technology or related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Install and wire protection and control panels, relays, and substation equipment.
• Perform functional testing of control circuits, alarms, and interlocks.
• Support commissioning and energization activities under supervision of P&C and commissioning engineers.
• Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of protective relays, breakers, transformers, and SCADA systems.
• Operate test equipment (multimeters, relay test sets) and verify relay settings and tripping schemes.
• Document test results and field commissioning reports with detailed notes.
• Follow NEEC and client safety procedures, including LOTO and PPE use.

Position Overview

TheProtection & Control (P&C) Technician is responsible for the installation, wiring, testing, and maintenance of protection, control, and automation systems in high-voltage substations. This role supports commissioning engineers and ensures that all protection schemes and control equipment are installed and operating correctly in accordance with design specifications, utility standards, and safety requirements. The position requires strong hands-on technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and effectively in field environments across multiple project sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in theinstallation and wiringof protection and control panels, relays, and related substation equipment.
• Performfunctional testing, point-to-point checks, and verificationof control circuits, alarms, and interlocks.
• Supportcommissioning and energization activitiesunder the supervision of P&C and commissioning engineers.
• Conductroutine maintenance and troubleshootingof protective relays, breakers, transformers, and SCADA systems.
• Operate and maintaintest equipmentsuch as multimeters, relay test sets (Omicron, Doble, Megger), and insulation testers.
• Verifyrelay settings, logic, and tripping schemesagainst design documentation.
• Document test results, issues, and resolutions in detailedfield and commissioning reports.
• Follow allNEEC and client safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE use, and substation entry requirements.
• Work collaboratively with engineers, construction teams, and utility representatives to ensure project success.

Qualifications

• Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent field experience inElectrical Engineering Technologyor a related discipline.
• Minimum2–5 years of experiencein P&C field testing, relay maintenance, or substation operations.
• Familiarity withprotective relays(SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens) and their associated software tools.
• Ability toread and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
• Proficiency withelectrical and electronic testing toolsand basic relay testing procedures.
• Strong understanding ofAC/DC control circuits, grounding, and communication systems.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently in the field.
• Willingness to travel to project sites across the U.S. and work in substation environments.

Preferred Skills

• Experience supportingutility or EPC substation projects.
• Working knowledge ofDNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 communication protocols.
• Familiarity withSCADA/RTU systemsand data point verification.
• OSHA 10/30 certification andNFPA 70Eelectrical safety training preferred.
• CPR and First Aid certifications are a plus.

Work Environment

This is afield-based positionthat involves travel to substations and renewable project sites. The role includes work in outdoor environments and around high-voltage electrical equipment. Strict adherence to safety procedures and quality standards is required.
