Job summary

Power Engineering Services is seeking a Protection & Control Designer to join our team. You will design and deliver high-voltage substation protection and control packages, from concept through construction support, collaborating with a multidisciplinary group to ensure quality results.

You will need 6+ years in P&C design, familiarity with IEEE/ANSI standards, and proficiency in AutoCAD (MicroStation a plus) along with strong organizational and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related technical discipline.
• 6+ years of protection and control design experience for utility substations.
• Experience designing substations 15kV–345kV.
• Working knowledge of IEEE/ANSI standards and utility practices.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD; MicroStation is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop protection and control design packages for high-voltage substations, including single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
• Design auxiliary systems such as station batteries and battery chargers.
• Coordinate with engineers and disciplines to ensure accurate project execution.
• Provide technical support during construction and respond to field questions.

About This Role

Power Engineering Services, a Quanta Services Company, is looking for an Protection & ControlDesigner to join our growing team. In this role, you will support the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects for electric utilities, contractors, and developers. You'll contribute throughout the project lifecycle—from conceptual design through detailed engineering and construction support—while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality solutions.

What You’ll Do

• Develop comprehensive protection and control design packages for high-voltage substations, including:
  • Single-line diagrams
  • Protection and control schematics
  • Elementary and wiring diagrams
  • Control house layouts
  • Relay panel front and rear layouts
  • Bills of material (BOMs)
• Design auxiliary systems, including station batteries, battery chargers, and associated equipment.
• Coordinate with engineers, designers, and other disciplines to ensure accurate and efficient project execution.
• Provide technical support during construction, respond to field questions, and assist with design revisions as needed.
• Deliver quality work while meeting project schedules, budgets, and client expectations.

What You’ll Bring

• Associate degree in Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline
• 6+ years of experience in protection and control design for utility substations
• Experience designing substations ranging from 15kV through 345kV
• Working knowledge of applicable IEEE, ANSI, and utility design standards.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with MicroStation is a plus.
• Strong understanding of protection and control design principles, drafting standards, and construction practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Willingness to learn new technologies and design software as needed.
