ABB is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer for a fully remote role with a preference for candidates located in Northern California. You will lead engineering activities across multiple disciplines, ensuring cost-effective and standards-compliant designs for utility, industrial, and commercial substations.

Responsibilities include acting as a design authority, preparing schematics and calculations, and coordinating with project teams.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
5+ years of experience in protection & control projects.
Ability to read electrical one-lines, schematics, and instruction manuals.
Proficient software experience: Easy Power, SKM Powertools, ETAP, Aspen, EMTP.
PE License in California required.
Candidates must already have work authorization to work for ABB in the US.

Responsibilities

Lead and support engineering design activities for substation protection & control/automation systems, including planning and execution of new and retrofit designs.
Develop engineering documentation and analyses (schematics, layouts, BOMs, reports) to support designs.
Manage project materials and design packages, and provide status updates to teams and customers.
Ensure safety practices and standards compliance while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

This position reports to:

Technical Consulting Manager II

Your role and responsibilities

As a Protection & Control Engineer, you will have the opportunity to act as the technical lead for all engineering activities in assignments. Each day, you will ensure the activities related to all engineering disciplines within the project are executed in an efficient and cost-effective manner. You will also showcase your expertise by acting as a design authority for a particular engineering discipline and completing the corresponding engineering assignments.

While this is a full remote position, there is preference for candidates located in the Northern California area.

Main Accountabilities

Lead and support engineering design activities for new and existing utility, industrial, and commercial substation protection & control/automation systems, including planning, coordination, and execution of new and retrofit designs.
Develop engineering documentation and perform analyses-such as schematics, logic diagrams, layouts, bills of materials, reports, and calculations-to support accurate, standardscompliant system designs.
Manage project materials, construction design packages, and technical issue resolution while providing ongoing communication, status updates, and support to project teams, management, partners, and customers.
Ensure adherence to safety practices, industry standards, and company/customer requirements while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and participating in training to maintain technical proficiency.

Requirements

Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering required. Masters Degree Preferred.
5+ years of experience in protection & control projects for utility customers.
Ability to read, correctly interpret, and apply electrical one-lines, schematics, and instruction manuals.
Proficient software experience should include Easy Power, SKM Powertools, ETAP, Aspen, and EMTP.
PE License in California required
Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US

While base salary is determined by things such as the successful applicant's qualifications and experience, this position is expected to pay between $83,300 and $133,280 annually.
