The Prosthetics Technician is responsible for fabrication of prosthetic & orthotic devices following prescription criteria, practitioner specifications and established timetables. Maintains and orders adequate supplies of fabrication materials and components.

Responsibilties

A day in the life of a Prosthetics Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Contour uprights, bands and stirrups.
  • Maintains and corrects joint alignment.
  • Attaches stirrups to shoes and re-attaches heels and soles.
  • Prepares and sews leather cuffs, corsets and straps.
  • Drape molds thermoplastics.
  • Cuts out, trims and finishes smooth edges of plastic.
  • Adds lifts to shoes.
  • Drape molds thermoplastic sockets.
  • Fabricates foam liners.
  • Laminates sockets, frames etc. with proper reinforcement and alignment.
  • Removes socket and/or frame and makes every attempt to save model.
  • Trims socket and/or frame edges with smooth finish
  • Bench align prosthetic devices.
  • Shape endoskeletal foam covers and exoskeletal prostheses.
  • Laminates external layers and finishes exoskeletal prostheses.
  • Seals and adds separator to negative casts.
  • Adds correct amount of plaster.
  • Ensures minimal air bubbles in positive model.
  • Assures mandrel is correct in length & in appropriate attitude.
  • Removes negative impression from model so it is ready to be modified.
  • Monitor & check stock weekly.
  • Orders components & supplies before stock runs out or for particular patients that has been assigned.
  • Obtains supervisor initials/signatures on requisitions, calls purchasing for PO number and calls in orders at practitioner's request. Faxes PO Requisition to Purchasing Department.
  • Checks orders when received against packing slips, signs & dates packing slip and enters in Horizon Supply Source on computer.
  • Assists with year end inventory tallying.
  • Explains and demonstrates fabrication techniques.
  • Assigns tasks to technician trainees and students.
  • Alerts supervisor when inappropriate techniques are observed.
  • Wears safety glasses and mask when using routers and grinders.
  • Returns all tools to proper storage area when done.
  • Cleans collection pans, bags and filters monthly.
  • Cleans work station and other areas throughout the day.
  • Stops 1/2 hour before end of day to clean.
  • Alerts supervisor to unsafe conditions.
  • Travels directly to and from destination without delay.
  • Reports any problems to supervisor immediately.
  • Marks all chemical containers with proper CAS numbers when received from supplier.
  • Returns all chemical containers to proper storage areas.
  • Uses gloves and protective glasses when handling chemicals.
  • Cleans spills immediately and alerts safety
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Demonstrated skill with power and hand tools.

Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred

  • At least 1 year experience in prosthetic & orthotic fabrication.
